- The Sportster Si is an RPI based modem ( Rockwell Protocol Interface
- or return product immediately depending on who you ask ). This means
- that it relies on the CPU in your computer and support software often
- in the form of a device driver to perform data compression as
- opposed to better modems which implement data compression in hardware
- contained in the modem. There are several disadvantages to this.
- If you're running a multitasking operating system, your CPU is tied up
- doing data compression for the modem which will degrade the
- performance of any other applications you're running. Use of the modem
- is restricted to those platforms on which you have software to perform
- the compression. Don't confuse RPI with Rockwell chip set. The
- Rockwell chipset is one of the more popular ones in use and modems
- that use this chipset often do implement their data compression in
- hardware. The Vi model is not RPI and the V is for voice. This modem
- provides some answering machine and voice mail type capabilities.

-
- A modem is a component I'd tend not to skimp on. A marginal modem can
- be a real pain. A good source of leads to vendors with competitve
- prices on PC components including modems is PC Today. Their URL is
- gopher://pccatalog.peed.com/
-
- If you insist on going the low price route I will mention an offer
- that caught my eye. On the MSN home page there was an offer for new
- internal 28.8 Rockwell chipset modems for $99. The URL is
- http://www.msn.com/.
